The story of Mu Lan, the legendary female warrior who impersonated a man in order to join the military, is derived from a poem written during the Sung Dynasty in China. While this would be a wonderful text to use in class because it features a powerful historical woman, both Cambodia and Vietnam have a history of political conflict with China so teachers would need to be sensitive to possible interethnic negative reactions.
