Yellow Terror: The Collections and Paintings of Roger Shimomura
Traveling exhibition avalaible beginning January 2011

Yellow Terror, Roger Shimomura, 2008, acrylic on canvas, 60" x 72". Courtesy of the Artist

Co-curated by Roger Shimomura and Dr. Stacey Uradomo-Barre, the Curator for the Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA), and produced by the Wing Luke Museum, the nation's only pan-Asian Pacific American museum and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Yellow Terror: The Collections and Paintings of Roger Shimomura marks the first exhibition of Shimomura's art in concert with the memorabilia and objects depicting racial stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans, accumulated by the artist over the last twenty years and donated to the archives of the Wing Luke Museum.

In his signature Pop Art style, Shimomura's paintings uncover and challenge the role of the media and material culture to define the American norm while establishing the perpetual Other. The exhibition features over 30 of Shimomura's paintings paired with his extensive and unique collections of Asian stereotypical ephemera, one of the largest of such collections in the nation. His collection, consisting of over 300 salt and pepper shakers, over 80 Halloween masks, assorted toys and everyday household items, among many other objects, and largely dating between the early 20th century and World War II, testifies to the pervasiveness of stereotypes and questions their lasting legacy today.

The Yellow Terror exhibition will be available for travel beginning January 2011. The exhibition is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue with an extended curatorial essay written by Dr. Stacey Uradomo-Barre along with color plates of Shimomura's paintings and collections.
