WHAT'S YOUR PASSION?
“Smart. FOB. Gang Member.” These are some of the words that are used to describe Asian Pacific Islander American youth. Noticeably, ‘passionate’ is not one of these words.
In the song, “Solstice Intro,” Geologic of the Seattle-based hip hop group, Blue Scholars, identifies the passions that drive him down ‘the long march’ of life: social justice and his son. Is Geologic, who wrote “Solstice Intro” as a young adult, the only passionate Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) youth out there?
We invite Asian Pacific Islander American youth, ages 15-20, to submit a creative expression – documentary, performance piece, visual art, or written word – that speaks to your passions. What inspires you and brings you joy? Why? How did you come by your passions? In what ways do your passions impact you…and others?
Please join our passionate conversation. Official Rules
In addition to a cash prize, the four grand prize winning expressions will be on display during February and March, 2009, at the Wing Luke Asian Museum. Four finalist expressions will also be exhibited. The four grand prize winners and four finalists will be invited to join YouthCAN participants and artist mentors in the development of an exhibition on APIA youth passions.
