BLACK LIVES MATTER RESOURCES

We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement. As Asian Pacific Americans, we condemn any system that does not see the humanity of Black lives. We denounce the deplorable violence inflicted on Black people for centuries perpetuated by systems built on an oppressive and racial hierarchy.

We reflect with gratitude on the many ways that change in our country is the result of civil disobedience, coalition building, and collective action. As Asian Pacific Americans, we stand as the beneficiaries of the leadership and sacrifices made by Black and Indigenous movement leaders throughout history who fought for social, political, and economic justice.

We acknowledge the painful biases and prevalence of anti-Blackness within our own communities and commit to the long fight to interrupt and replace this with a sense of justice that centers the humanity of Black lives.

In our storytelling, preservation of histories, and lifting up of community voice, the work of our museum seeks to stop the perpetuation of historical oppression against communities of color and other marginalized people. When we say “Never Again Is Now!” we know that this must also mean ending the cycle of racism that perpetuates harm and state-sanctioned violence against Black lives as well as the denial of economic and social justice for the Black community.

In solidarity, we can make the change we want to see — we have to be firm that lasting change begins from within. We commit to creating spaces for listening and learning between Asian Pacific Americans, the Black community, and other communities of color. We commit to expanding our current partnerships with other communities of color as we work together toward collective action to advance racial and social equity.

“We Stand With Black Lives Matter”.

I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with the staff of amazing artists at the Wing Luke Museum. Two weeks ago, @jessieanneruby from Wing Luke Museum reached out to collaborate. From our first zoom meeting, I knew we had to work together. It felt like the ancestors had brought us together.

🌞

“Where do you stand?” book ends both sides of the mural on King Street, asks the viewer to think about the history of the land Seattle stands on and the current social and political state of Seattle and United States.

✊🏿

We chose the color indigo for the background to symbolize connection to African and Asian Diasporas. After we completed painting the background. I drew the mural with chalk while our group of artists and volunteers traced over with latex paint markers and painted in shapes and text. We also wheat pasted a few of the many people who have stood up for the rights of Asian and African-Americans in Seattle. Lastly, we added a QR code to the 8th Street side and Canton alley sides of the mural to link to resources.

🖤

Thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Wing Luke Museum for coming together to make this beautiful and meaningful mural. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, community, and love. And extra love to the people living and working in Chinatown/International District for welcoming me with open arms and hearts. Your good vibes protected us and kept us going. Happy Friday!

This is by no means an exhaustive list and there are many more community leaders who have stood up for the rights of Asian Americans and African Americans in Seattle. Community leaders included in the mural from left to right:
