About Mahjong in Our Community
Mahjong has long been played in homes across Asian and NHPI communities. It’s passed between generations at kitchen tables, during family gatherings, and in everyday moments.
Today, the game is also finding new life in public spaces, where friends and strangers gather to play, learn, and connect. This event brings those two worlds together: the intimacy of home and the energy of community.
In Seattle’s Chinatown–International District and across the region, people play many styles of mahjong originating from Asia, including Hong Kong (13-tile), Filipino, Szechuan, Japanese Riichi, and more. During open play, tables may use different styles, and participants are welcome to join, observe, and learn from one another.
Many styles share a common foundation, especially the 13-tile format. Pre-register for the mahjong beginner session to learn or refresh the basics, then explore different variations and play across traditions.
